I will try to answer one of the burning questions, Anne. The one about the tree burning from the inside out. If the ground water has been drained away, there can be a fire below ground burning for years. Literally! Years! The roots of trees catch fire, and the tree appears to burn from within.
As I have said before: I remember about a decade or so ago seeing a map of the US, and the guy who made the video was pointing at the area west of the continental divide saying "If you live here, you won't!" Then he pointed at the northern Midwest and repeated it.
Thanks for this explanation, Greater Israhell. The arborist interviewed by Peggy Hall has a different analysis, and he may have been more specific than I was in he considers the trees burning from inside out he's been studying as anomalies.
Re: trees burning from inside out! Yes, it happens. Where there is fire nearby tree roots can catch on fire resulting in the fire coming up inside the tree fed by the root system. Happened on my sisters property when her husband was burning leaves in the yard. What a surprise and a lesson that was!
