A truly groanworthy pun in keeping with the grand tradition of the Xmas cracker hilarities.

See you in 2023 for more battle with the humourless forces of stupidity and darkness.

Oh this is excellent! At first I was going to congratulate you for equal representation of green people. Then I read the note. My all-time favorite bumper sticker: visualize whirled peas. Happy holidays Anne and thank you for your kind support of my 'stack, reading and commenting. Fleece navy duds for everyone!

Nice sentiment. Although I don't like the burka. Burka = oppression of women.

Expand full comment

Yet still they exist and it would be nice if some would make a move to be more loving. They aren't the bad guy. I see your point though. I bet some don't like the image of a Sikh for valid or invalid reasons. Blonde white chicks.

***** enter the peas!!! ******

I hear you, Jojo, and I agree that the burka is a symbol of the oppression of women, but I wanted to show as varied an assortment of humanity as I could come up with. Showing reality doesn’t mean condoning it.

As far as symbols of oppression of women go, what about some fashions for women in the west? Bikinis, stilletto heels, corsets, etc.? Other cultures might look at ours and cringe at how sexualized women’s clothing is.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hijabs, burkas, niqabs. Why are Western feminists so accepting of this? It’s so amazingly anti-feminist. Women are walking around with their head (and often whole body) covered because it’s their responsibility not to stimulate men’s libido. How insane is that? Women in Iran are dying for refusing to wear a headdress whereas Western feminists are spinning this as a woman’s right to dress as she pleases and are normalizing it. We should not be accepting of the hijab/burka/niqab to act in solidarity with women in Muslim countries who go to jail or die for refusing to wear one. I often see Muslim families when I go to the beach. The men are having a terrific time frolicking in the water. The women are dressed head to toe in black garb hiding underneath the shade of a tree. This is inclusion? This is multiculturalism? This is phoney baloney. It’s Western feminists totally dropping the ball on this issue because of « political correctness ». Oppression comes in many shades. It’s not because it comes from another culture that it’s not oppression. We have seen an explosion of women wearing head coverings (at increasingly young ages) since Khomeini took power in Iran in the 1980’s. Head coverings are a way for political Islam to mark its territory (presenting it as a religious edict) and symbolize a resistance to integrate into Western society which Islam considers decadent. Why does the woke movement not question the practice of head coverings? Why does it play in the hands of sexist and oppressive islamist propaganda that uses women for political gain? You can counter argue and say that Western women wear stilettos and bikinis, but ultimately it's their choice, even though there is societal pressure to do so. There are no moral police walking around telling Western women what they have to wear. Sorry for the long post. I love your "Anne can't stand it" work. It's too cool. And I feel a kinship with you. My name is Joanne, and Jo-Anne can't stand it either!!! LOL

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Joanne! By including a woman wearing a burka does not mean I condone wearing hijabs, burkas or niqabs, I’m reflecting a reality.

I don’t want to argue with you and I don’t disagree with you. I hear you, especially about the men having a great time and the women covered head to toe. I’ll think about what you’ve said, and I appreciate your taking the time to express your take on this.

I’m really glad to hear you feel a kinship with me and not being able to stand it! Thanks again, Joanne!
