Thirteen years ago today, I was illustrating a greeting card in my studio on the upper west side of Manhattan, listening to the radio in stunned disbelief. One plane hit Tower Two, a second plane hit Tower One, both were enveloped in smoke and flames until they collapsed. A plane had been hijacked in Pennsylvania, another had flown into the Pentagon.
Although I had no idea who was behind the attacks or what their motives might be, I knew that life would never be the same.
At the time, I had a contract to create cartoons for a weekly feature called “Women at Work.” What on earth would I come up with? Could I be even remotely funny? I did my best.
