He and Joan had been separated for years, ever since she moved in with another woman. She feigned interest in his welfare to stay in his good graces because she was hoping to be included in his will since he is wealthy. He thought he was pleasing her by letting her know of his recent happiness. Of course she pushed him over and collected the inheritance and the insurance money too.
